About VarsityMentor

VarsityMentor is a digital network of African tech professionals in the diaspora and a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization committed to tackling the problem of graduate unemployment in Africa. Currently, about half of the 3 million students who graduate from Africa's over 2,389 universities every year end up not finding work. We connect college and university students in Africa with carefully vetted African tech professionals in the diaspora and their allies for mentoring, skills development and career pathway guidance.

Consortium Involvement

We are excited to be part of the consortium because as generative AI reshapes higher education by enabling personalized learning, automating content creation, and enhancing productivity for students and educators alike, it is imperative that African universities engage critically with this transformation. Working with the Consortium has enabled us to bring relevant stakeholders across African universities to start this critical discussion and engagement.

The first part of our planned involvement with the Consortium will focus on ascertaining the current state of the CS curricula of universities in Africa, understanding the challenges that confront them and the unique contributions African institutions can make to global AI education.

Next, we will bring together key stakeholders to ideate and redesign the universities’ CS education for an AI-driven future. Subsequent programs will aim to build on and scale up these efforts with the overarching goal of providing universities and faculty members with the necessary knowledge, skills and tools as well as the confidence they need to execute the task of transforming their CS education and inculcating generative AI into their CS teaching in a meaningful and practical manner to equip the African graduate to thrive competitively in the AI age.
